Dr. Matthew Rauen places the first EVO Visian® Implantable Collamer® Lens in Iowa. Patients now have another alternative to LASIK!

On May 6, 2022, Dr. Matthew Rauen placed the first EVO Visian® Implantable Collamer® Lens in Iowa for Wolfe Eye Clinic patient, Carolina. This lens provided a safe, effective option for Carolina to achieve independence from glasses and contacts. The recent FDA approval of the EVO Visian ICL,  gives another option to millions of people with myopia, or nearsightedness.

EVO Visian Implantable Collamer Lenses, often called implantable contact lenses (ICLs), have now been placed in more than 1 million eyes in 63 countries according to the manufacturer. An ICL is a removable lens placed behind the iris (the colored part of the eye). The lens is not noticeable without using a microscope, requires no maintenance, and can remain in the eye for a patient’s lifetime. Consisting primarily of collagen and water, the lens works well with the eye’s natural chemistry and surgery is not painful.

Patients desiring freedom from glasses, but who have been told they are not candidates for laser vision correction, now have another option to consider as an alternative. The EVO Visian ICL can successfully correct nearsighted prescriptions between the range of -3.0 diopters to -20.0 diopters. The EVO TORIC Visian ICL can treat astigmatism values up to 4.0 diopters. For the right candidates, it can provide a solution to be less dependent on glasses or contacts.
